Why Use a Barbershop Instead of a Hair Salon?

Many men feel uncomfortable going to hair salons.  They think that is only where women get their haircut. Men feel out of place among the nail polish, lipstick, hair bows, and fashion jewelry that are often scattered around the salon. On the one hand, men want a fashionable hairstyle in keeping with the current styles. On the other hand, they think that if they go to a barber they will get a haircut that is straight out of the Andy Griffith’s show from the 1950s.

That’s not true for today’s barbershops.

So for men, what is the difference between a barbershop and a hair salon?  How are they different? You might be surprised to find out there really isn’t much difference between the two.

The main thing is that a hair salon is considered a full-service business. This means that they offer manicures, pedicures, hair removal by waxing or laser, hair coloring, and application of permanent cosmetics.

Barbershops don’t offer many of these services. Don’t expect a manicure or a pedicure at a barbershop. They generally focus more on the hair cutting services than aesthetic things like manicures, pedicures, hair removal, and hair coloring.

Barbers are also highly trained in using hair clippers – especially without using a guard. They get extensive training on cutting men’s’ hair using clippers. Barber schools train heavily in this area whereas beauty schools don’t.

Barbers also have better beard trimming skills. They give straight-edge shaves that give a crisp clean edge to a beard and mustache. This is critical if you have a beard. You don’t want a shaggy one that makes you look like Attila the Hun. A barber can also give you a steam facial treatment when he gives you a straight-edge cut on your beard that will leave you feeling like a million bucks.

Barbers can color, tip, highlight, and bleach hair if you are looking to have your hair coloring changed. He is just as trained and qualified as someone in a hair salon.
